
As a school leader, I’ve walked into classrooms and conferences where emotions were high. Teachers overwhelmed. Students dysregulated. And what was missing every time wasn’t a lack of skill—it was the absence of emotional space. A space to pause, to feel, to connect.

Growth is uncomfortable, but understanding where that discomfort comes from allows us to move ahead with clarity. In these very moments, I remind myself that rejection is simply a redirection.

Why is it so challenging to change deeply rooted patterns, even when we know they no longer fulfill us?

I believe that knowing yourself—truly knowing yourself—is one of the most powerful tools we have. It allows us to stop hiding from the parts of ourselves that we’ve pushed away in order to fit into a world that doesn’t always understand us. To be fully seen by others, we must first see ourselves.

A gentle reminder that a low mood is completely normal. However, it’s not okay to stay there. I want to share three tips that help me, and hopefully you, step out of that low mood, regulate emotions, and move forward with purpose.

When you feel as though you haven’t made enough progress, take a moment to remember how far you’ve come. Each of us has climbed mountains that nobody else may know about, and we did it one micro-step at a time.

Every time I wanted to slip up, I reminded myself, “I love myself enough to make the choice with long-term rewards.” This mantra helped me stay focused.

A positive perspective doesn’t mean ignoring setbacks or pretending everything is perfect. It’s about recognizing that challenges will happen and preparing ourselves mentally to face them.

Looking at your past through the lens of shame doesn’t change it or make it better. Your past is your teacher. It is part of your transformation. Accept it. Heal it. And live.
