“Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.”
– Brené Brown, “The Gifts of Imperfection
As I reflect on the eve of my 39th birthday, I find myself in a space that’s both familiar and deeply challenging. It’s the transitional space many of us encounter—a space where you’re actively building something meaningful, yet you feel stretched thin by the demands of daily life.
For me, this transition looks like pursuing my dream of building a thriving business while balancing the demanding responsibilities of my 9-to-5 as a school administrator. The weight of juggling these priorities can be overwhelming, leaving me with little energy to pour into my aspirations. My dream. My goals. Me.
If you’ve felt this way—burned out, exhausted, and wishing you could fast-forward through the tough parts—you’re not alone. Many of us suppress our fatigue, masking the emotions that come with feeling overworked and undervalued. But this avoidance only tightens the invisible knots within us. Instead of rushing through the difficult moments, what if we used them as an opportunity for self-discovery and healing?
Through journaling, I’ve learned to sit with my emotions and gradually untangle those knots. And tonight, I want to share this practice with you—a strategy to process your feelings, create clarity, and reconnect with your resilience.
Why We Try to Rush Through Life’s Challenges
When life feels hard, our instinct is often to push forward, suppress the discomfort, and hope it passes quickly. But growth happens when we slow down and pay attention to what’s inside. Your frustrations, fears, and struggles aren’t roadblocks—they’re invitations to learn more about yourself and build resilience.
Through journaling, we can explore the knots that hold us back and learn to untangle them gently. This isn’t about solving everything overnight; it’s about creating space to reflect, feel, and take intentional steps forward.
A Journaling Practice to Heal and Untangle Life’s Knots
If you’re in a difficult season, journaling can be a transformative tool to help you process your emotions and regain a sense of direction. Here’s a simple yet powerful practice to help you navigate your challenges:
1. Name the Knot
Begin by asking yourself: What feels heavy in my life right now? Write freely about the emotions, stressors, or situations that feel tangled. Let the words flow without judgment.
2. Explore the Knot
Use these journaling prompts to dive deeper:
- What emotions are tied to this challenge?
- How has this situation impacted my energy, mindset, or relationships?
- If I could describe this struggle as a knot, what does it look like? (Is it tight, frayed, impossible to untangle?)
3. Reframe the Knot
Once you’ve acknowledged your feelings, consider what this challenge might be teaching you. Write down your thoughts:
- What can I learn about myself through this experience?
- How have I handled similar situations in the past?
- What strengths am I building as I navigate this?
4. Take One Micro Step
End your journaling session by identifying one small action you can take to loosen the knot. For example:
- Write a to-do list to tackle one aspect of the issue.
- Commit to resting or taking a break to recharge.
- Reach out to a trusted friend for support.
5. Affirm Your Resilience
Close your journal entry with a kind reminder to yourself:
- I am doing my best, and that is enough.
- Each small step moves me closer to the life I’m building.
- I trust that I will get through this.
Why Journaling Works
Journaling allows you to slow down and connect with your thoughts and emotions in a meaningful way. It creates a safe space to process feelings and reframe challenges as opportunities for growth. Over time, this practice helps untangle the knots in your life, making them easier to navigate when they arise again.
Be Kind to Yourself
As I step into my 39th year, I’m embracing the reality that it’s okay to feel just okay. Life’s transitions are not meant to be rushed—they’re meant to teach us, shape us, and remind us of our strength. By journaling, I’ve found a way to honor the small steps I’m taking and trust that they’re leading me closer to my dreams.
I also highly recommend Brené Brown’s FFT Podcast episode. It resonated with me four years ago and still helps me through today’s emotions. In this episode, she dives into the rawness of facing first times and how embracing discomfort can lead to growth. Her perspective is a powerful reminder that owning our story, even the messy parts, is the bravest thing we can do.
I hope this practice brings you clarity, peace, and the courage to keep moving forward. Life’s knots may feel overwhelming, but they’re also a testament to your resilience. You’ve untangled them before, and you can do it again—one word, one step, one moment at a time.
Ready to Start?
If this resonates with you, take five minutes today to journal. Start small, follow the prompts, and let your words guide you. Journaling is a practice of self-love and growth, and you deserve the space it creates.
Let’s untangle the knots together.
