The Beauty of Being Complicated

Don’t let the expectations and ideas of others limit who you are. If you let others tell you who you are, you are living their reality — not yours.
– Roy T. Bennett

In a world that often demands simplicity and conformity, it’s time to celebrate the beauty of being complicated. Life isn’t meant to be a one-size-fits-all experience, and neither are we. When I meet people and they ask to know a bit about me I enjoy leading with, “I am a multi-faceted woman.” I believe it 100%, not only me, but everyone has a complex life. We each have our own unique blend of experiences, emotions, and perspectives. As this is the last week of September and the theme has been about seasonal shifts, I want you to give yourself permission to be complicated. It’s time to stop the struggle to make ourselves ‘easy’ for others because, in reality, our intricacies are what make us special.

The Pressure to Simplify
Many of us bend over backward to simplify things for everyone around us. We want to fit into neat categories and boxes, be easily understood, and avoid making waves. But in doing so, we risk complicating the most important relationship we have—the one with ourselves. Just as you can’t change the laws of nature, you can’t change the essence of who you are to conform to others who don’t know how to embrace others’ unique qualities. You are beautifully complex, and that’s something to cherish, not suppress.

Creating Space for Your Complexity
It’s perfectly okay to be multi-faceted, with layers and depths that unfold over time. Your quirks, passions, and contradictions are what make you, you. These are the puzzle pieces of your soul, waiting to be explored and celebrated. The moment you start embracing your complexity, you’ll notice a transformation within yourself. You’ll feel a sense of freedom as you shed the expectations and judgments that come with trying to fit into a narrow mold. It’s liberating to be authentic, to let your true self shine through. It’s also embracing other’s complex ways of being. If you tend to put others in a box, you more than likely do it to yourself.

Attracting the Right People
As you embrace your complicated self, something magical happens: you naturally attract those who resonate with your uniqueness. When you stop pretending to be something you’re not, you create space for genuine connections with people who appreciate you for who you are, not who you think you should be. The people who truly belong in your journey will naturally align with your beautiful complexity. They’ll be drawn to your authenticity and will see the value in your individuality. These are the people who will stand by your side through thick and thin, appreciating the rich tapestry of your personality.

Shifting Perspective
So, let’s shift our perspective. Instead of trying to complicate life for yourself, embrace your “complicated” self. Acknowledge that your uniqueness is something to be appreciated and valued. It’s what sets you apart from the crowd and makes your journey through life an adventure. Remember, you don’t need to conform to society’s expectations or anyone else’s standards. Your path is uniquely yours, and the world needs your authentic self. So, let go of the need to simplify, and allow your complexity to shine brightly.

Being complicated isn’t a burden; it’s a gift. It’s an invitation to explore the depths of your soul and to connect with others on a profound level. Embrace your complexity, and you’ll find that life becomes a richer, more vibrant experience, filled with the beauty of authenticity and the joy of genuine connections.

Self-Reflection Moment:

What aspects of your beautifully complicated self have you been suppressing or trying to simplify to fit into societal norms, and how might embracing your complexity lead to a more authentic and fulfilling life?

Take a moment today to journal or meditate on the self-reflection question. Explore the layers of your personality, passions, and quirks that you may have hidden or downplayed. Then, make a conscious effort to celebrate and embrace your unique complexity. Share your journey with someone you trust, and encourage them to do the same. Together, let’s create a world that values and cherishes the beautifully complicated individuals we all are.
