“Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in our charge”.
– Simon Sinek
“Self-care is a trend, nobody really has time for it.” Sound familiar? My days are packed with meetings, constant decision-making, and solving problems, leaving little room for anything else. As a first-generation Latina, I was raised to believe that hard work and sacrifice were the only paths to success. Leadership, I thought, demanded complete selflessness.
I see now how flawed that belief was. Ignoring my own needs didn’t make me a better leader—it made me irritable, overwhelmed, and disconnected. While I masked those emotions well, there were moments when the cracks showed. I would snap at others. I was overly judgmental. Sometimes, I simply felt like I was carrying the weight of the world alone.
I’m here to tell you that leadership doesn’t have to feel that way. You can’t pour from an empty cup. Prioritizing self-care is the key to thriving in your role and all areas of life. Today, I’ll share the self-care practices that transformed my leadership journey. I will also provide a journaling prompt to help you reflect. Additionally, I’ll explain why working with a leadership coach can take you to the next level.
Why Self-Care Matters for Leaders
Leadership often demands long hours, tough decisions, and the ability to inspire others. But without self-care, these demands can lead to burnout, emotional exhaustion, and even strained relationships.
Simon Sinek, one of the most respected voices on leadership, reminds us that “Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge.” Taking care of others starts with taking care of yourself.
When you prioritize self-care:
Your energy and focus improve, enabling better decision-making.
You model healthy habits for your team, fostering a balanced work culture.
You build resilience, which allows you to handle challenges with grace.

Five Simple Self-Care Practices for Leaders
Here’s a checklist to help you build a sustainable self-care routine:
- Morning Mindfulness (Mind & Soul): Spend 5 minutes each morning practicing deep breathing or using a meditation app like Calm. This sets a positive tone for your day.
Example: Sit in a quiet space, close your eyes, and breathe deeply, focusing on the present moment. - Daily Movement (Body): Take a 20-30 minute walk outside during lunch or after work. Physical activity reduces stress and clears your mind.
Example: Walk in a local park or around your neighborhood while listening to your favorite podcast.
- Read for Pleasure (Mind): Dedicate 5 -10 minutes a day to reading a non-work-related book. This keeps your mind sharp and provides an escape from daily stressors.
Example: Pick up a novel, memoir, or self-help book that inspires you.
- Unplugged Family Time (Soul): Plan one evening a week. Be fully present with loved ones. Stay free of devices and distractions.
Example: Cook dinner together, play a board game, or take a walk.
- Gratitude Journaling (Mind & Soul): Every night, write down three things you’re grateful for. This simple practice shifts your mindset and helps you focus on the positives.
Example: Use a journal to reflect on your day and note what brought you joy.
